Wig 101 for Beginners

by admin / January 26, 2019

Hi! It’s Jess and Cristie, and we are your (ex) Lymphoma wig connoisseurs. We both went through treatment for Hodgkin’s Lymphoma and spent our days messaging each other photos of our wigs, Pinterest wig inspo, and of course..our hair growth. Since sharing is caring, we figured we would share the wig hack wealth, so here are our tips! Not to toot our own horns, but we did have some bomb wigs, so let’s do this.

Make sure you get a prescription for your first wig and check if insurance covers it. Most health insurance companies cover part or all of the cost of the wig if your doctor writes a prescription. Ask for a prescription for an “extra-cranial prosthesis” (that is, a wig!) to submit to your insurer. Not every company reimburses, but you should totally try. Wigs aren’t cheap. First call your insurance and see if and how much they will reimburse you for. They also may be able to recommend places that offer wigs that you can go to.

So, let’s start out with Cristie’s wig plugs..let’s do this!

All of the above are Blake – Jon Renau. They are very nice, amazing hairline and parting, thick and luxurious human hair. They are a bit pricey, so see what your health insurance covers. Most wig shops carry Jon Renau!
The above are all Zara – Jon Renau. Synthetic wigs, which are better if you don’t want to spend a lot of money on human hair. Synthetic is more shiny so it can sometimes look a little fake, but dry shampoo always helps!
The above are all Freedom couture wig. This was the “Celine” but they don’t make this one anymore. Their wigs have gotten 1000x better since we went through treatment. You can order on freedomcouture.com.au They are a bit pricey, so we would recommend to try Gardeaux wigs for equally beautiful and very similar style. The website is www.gardeauxwigs.com
Oh and one more thing- this is how Cristie’s Blake dried! Wavey and beautiful, we would highly recommend as it isn’t a lot of maintenance.

Now, here are my wig plugs! V similar to Cristie’s. Here ya go! Jon Renau for the win on the first ones.

The above was my go to. Jon Renau “Drew” which is available online or at wig shops! It’s synthetic with an amazing lace front part. You MUST ALWAYS look for lace front, because they look the most real. The only negative about this wig is that you do have to replace it every few months because it doesn’t last as long as I would have liked it to, but I did wear it all of the time! Super cute, super real looking. One of my favorites.

The above are synthetic Jon Renau “Kristen” in blonde and brunette. I loved these because they were very light, but also a very realistic bob. Google for the best prices, I always found galleryofwigs.com to be the best. I used to use RENAU30 at checkout for 30% off, this may or may not still work.

All of the above are the same real human hair wig. It was long at first and I got it cut because I fell in love with the LOB length. This brand is Raquel Welch human hair and it was my favorite for human hair. Highly recommed this wig because it looks so natural. I actually still have it, hehe.

The above wig was a human hair 360 frontal and it was amazing because I could wear my hair up! A stylist from Atlanta made me this wig. You can contact her on instagram @frenchydollface. She’s a doll and so are her wigs. If you miss wearing your hair up, I highly recommend investing in one of these!

So, these are our wig hacks and we hope you enjoy them! If you ever have any questions, you can follow Cristie and I on IG. @cristielaratta @jessdecris

As always, sending you all lots of love and good wig days, from two cancer survivors!
